|
 Spanish (Español in Spanish) or Castilian (castellano) is a Romanic language originating from the northern area of Spain. With time, its use gradually spread inside the Kingdom of Castile, where it developed and evolved to eventually become the main language of the government and trade. Spanish was later taken to Africa, Latin America and Asia during different colonial activities of Spain’s golden era.
Today, Spanish is the official language of Spain, most Latin American countries and Equatorial Guinea. In total, 21 countries use Spanish as their first language and Spanish is also one of six official languages of the United Nations.
Spanish is spoken by almost 400 million people natively, making it the most spoken Romanic language in the world.
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States and by far the most popular studied foreign language in US schools and universities. Mexico is the world's largest Spanish-speaking country.
Spanish is in general one of the most popular foreign languages studied in schools around the world. Learning Spanish offers the opportunity to visit and explore better a large number of new countries and territories. This is a very attractive factor for many people around the world.
According to George Weber's point system, Spanish is the third most influential language in the world.
